Real walking distances along streets and paths, not straight lines, scored for any address in 31 European countries: the walk to eight daily needs and how pleasant the street is. Checked against the census in France, Ireland and the UK: where people can walk to more, more of them walk to work.

How scores work

Every place gets a score from 0 to 100. The score has two parts.

Reach, 60%: How many minutes you walk, on real streets, to eight daily needs: food and drink, public transport, shops, culture, school, groceries, parks and health. A shorter walk earns more points. The second and third places nearby count too.
Street quality, 40%: How pleasant the streets are for walking. We look at traffic, noise (where a noise map exists), shade in summer, main roads nearby and slope.

A very unpleasant street keeps the total score from being high, even when everything is close. A place with nothing in walking distance also scores low, even when its streets are quiet.

The map shows one score for each six-sided cell, about 95 m across, that a walkable street crosses. Zoomed out, a hexagon shows the average of the places inside it.

Each colour is a fixed score range, the same everywhere in Europe.

Zoomed in, the shades compare places with their neighbours. The places in this part of the map are put in five groups of the same size. The darkest shade is the best fifth.

Under "What makes the score", one line compares the score with the places in the city around the spot you chose. Outside any city, it compares with the country: "Better than 82% of the country".

The shades on the map compare places with the rest of the view, so they change when you move or zoom the map. The comparison with the city does not change.

Each of the eight walks has a bar of ten cells. It is full for a walk of 2 minutes or less and empty for 15 minutes or more. The word comes from the same minutes: "Very close" up to 5, "Close" up to 10, "Far" up to 15, "Very far" above that.
