How to credit Walkably

Credit lines ready to copy, and every data source with its licence.

1The credit we ask for

When you use Walkably's scores, map or data for free, name Walkably with a link to walkably.org, and credit OpenStreetMap contributors. Use a normal link, so that search engines can follow it. Where a credit next to each score does not fit, give it once on your site or app, for example on its about page. Some parts need more sources: see section 3.

For a website or app

Paste this HTML next to the score or the map. If your site does not take HTML, use the line for an article.

It looks like this: Source: Walkably · © OpenStreetMap contributors

Source: <a href="https://walkably.org">Walkably</a> · © <a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright">OpenStreetMap contributors</a>

To show the score of one place on your page, copy the free Walkably badge. It already holds the credit.

Spanish cities as one table: walking minutes to daily needs in 36 cities (CSV, page in Spanish).

For an article or post

Put it under the figure or in the text. Online, link Walkably to walkably.org and OpenStreetMap contributors to openstreetmap.org/copyright.

Source: Walkably, walkably.org. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

For a paper, thesis or report

Replace [area] and [date] with your own.

Walkably. Walkability scores for 31 European countries. walkably.org. Score for [area], read on [date]. Method: walkably.org/about. Data © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL; other sources as credited at walkably.org/credits.

For a data file or database

Put these lines in the file's notes or readme, because the data is under the Open Database License (ODbL).

Contains information from Walkably, https://walkably.org, available under the ODbL. Contains information from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright, available under the ODbL.

If you are not sure how to credit your use, write to hello@walkably.org.

2Why we ask

Walkably's scores and map data are free for anyone under the ODbL, the licence of OpenStreetMap. Companies may also use them for free, with credit, except the city boundaries: a company that shows them needs a licence from EuroGeographics (see the table below). The OpenStreetMap contributors made the data, and the ODbL asks you to show where it comes from. A credit with a link also helps your readers find the map and check a score, and it helps people find Walkably, which is a small project.

Business licences, files and API access for companies come with their own terms, which you can read on the business page.

3Every data source, with its licence

OpenStreetMap is behind every score. If you show anything from the table “On the map” beyond the OpenStreetMap streets and places, such as a city or district score, the city boundaries or the summer shade (an estimate made from tree cover), name that row's source in the same place. Rows marked “Required wording” give the exact words those sources ask for. The second table lists only what we compared the scores with, so you credit it only if you reuse that data.
