1How far the site meets the standard
We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 at level AA (the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). Walkably partly meets this standard: the coloured hexagons on the map have no text version. The pages we tested passed the checks in section 4. We expect the other city and district pages, built from the same templates, to behave the same way.
2What is still open
- The map hexagons have no text version, and we haven't set a date for one. Section 3 gives the same scores as text.
- A test with a screen reader. We haven't yet tested the map panel or the pages with one. We plan this test by the end of January 2027.
3The same scores as text, and the keyboard
Search an address or place on the map, and a panel shows its score and walking minutes as text. City pages give their scores and lists of areas as text and tables. District pages rank every district in a table that you can sort.
With the keyboard, use the arrow keys to move the map, + and - to zoom, and Enter to open the panel for the place in the middle of the map.
4How we tested
We tested 20 pages: the map, city pages in English, German and French, a district ranking, the business pages, and the information pages such as About, Accuracy, Credits and Legal. We tested each page on screens 320, 390 and 1440 pixels wide.
An automated check of the WCAG A and AA rules that software can test found no problems on these pages. Software can't check every rule, so we also checked these points by hand. All passed:
- Every link, button and form field can be reached with the Tab key and shows a visible focus outline.
- The opening intro on the map closes with Escape or the “Skip intro” button.
- Pages need no sideways scrolling at any of these widths.
- If your device asks for less motion, the intro and page animations stop.
5Tell us what doesn't work
If you find a problem, email hello@walkably.org. Tell us which page you used and what didn't work. We reply within 5 working days.
If the text in section 3 doesn't work for you either, ask us in the same email: we send the score and the walking minutes for your address.
6About this statement
We tested the site and wrote this statement on 30 October 2026. We review it every six months, and after any large change to the site.
It covers the pages of walkably.org. Downloads (CSV and map data files) are data, not web pages, so it doesn't cover their content.
